“..She knows her stuff. More than her experience, Lis is a wonderful personality that attracts students into wanting to do better in math. Her passion for math (along with passion for life) is consistently evident. Students do not have the ability to hide away and not be noticed, or pushed to improve. Her environment is rigorous with high expectations, yet every student knows with confidence that she will support and assist them individually and patiently when necessary.”
Greg Schellenberg - High School Principal, Shanghai Community International School
“Lis’s approach to classroom teaching and student instruction is as current and educationally sound as I’ve ever seen. She is a master at differentiation, and has a knack of meeting students where they are. Lis consistently finds creative ways to reach her students so that learning can occur, and her passion for education is apparent in everything she does”
Daniel Kerr - Current Middle School Principal, Shanghai Community International School
"Lis, you put amazing time and energy into supporting the most vulnerable students in your care. You know when to push for more and when to take the pressure off. We value your deep knowledge and large amount of experience (that you are always willing to share) but this comes second to your sense of humour"
Discovery College leadership team 2014
"Lis is truly a Renaissance woman. Her interests are diverse and her skills extraordinary. She has helped build theatre sets with my IB students and has taken charge of the backstage facilitation during performances. She is reliable, handy with a circular saw, and a wonderful asset to both the classroom and Performing Arts Department."
Kelly M. Webber, Head of Performing Arts, Shanghai Community International School
"This brings me onto my final thank you, which is to our wonderful, caring, loving, supportive, blunt, sassy, groovy, chic and best Dean anyone could ever ask for, Ms Wilson. Wilson I’ll be honest, I was terrified of you the first day of school and I’m pretty sure a lot of us will forever be encapsulated by you going “Just because I’m short and fat, doesn’t mean I can’t get down low on the dance floor.” Ms Wilson, over the course of 3 years, you have not only been an amazing Maths teacher and Dean, but you’ve become a close friend to a lot of us. Your ability to believe in a student’s capability and providing your students with overwhelming love will be missed as we depart our separate ways. Our 47 students in this year is incomplete without our 48th family member, which is you Ms Wilson."
Emma Yong, Discovery College Graduation speech
"Ms. Wilson is easily one of the best teachers I've had during my high school career. Her spirited attitude towards maths (notice how I put the "s"), kept me motivated despite the difficulties encountered. More importantly, her lessons are clear, I am able to ask questions, and she is very much dedicated to her students. Hard to believe but she actually makes maths kind of fun!"
Ariane Chan, IB , SCIS
"I hated math and I still do. It is just so boring and I am so bad at it. When I was in Lis Wilson's math class, somehow I did not feel boring and somehow I aced IB math exams….What have you done to me Wilson?! "
Yu Tae Jong, IB , SCIS
Lis is easily one of the best maths teachers I've ever had. Her lessons are clear and organised. She always makes the concepts presented seem simple, as a good teacher should. At the same time, she goes beyond the call of duty to give individual attention when it's needed - something very important that too few maths teachers, especially at higher levels, are willing to do. Finally, she has a great sense of humour and personality, and that makes class - if not the maths! - fun. I've had many other maths teachers (including ones with doctorates in maths). Most had some of these traits. Lis has them all, and that's what separates her.
